Original Sin. Why We Sin | Amos 9.11-15
The Story
Why do we sin?
Scripture teaches that the problem is deeper than our circumstances, our upbringing, or outside influences.
Because of Adam's sin, we are born with a corrupted nature—a sin nature inclined toward sin. In this message from Amos 9:11–15, we examine the Biblical doctrine of original sin and what it means for the condition of the human soul.
Our sinful nature does not merely make us guilty; it deceives us and draws us toward sin. Even as Christians, we experience the conflict Paul describes in Romans 7: we know what God commands, yet we still struggle against sin within us. Sin promises satisfaction, freedom, or pleasure, but Scripture exposes its deceitfulness.
This sermon segment examines original sin, the corruption of the human heart, the sin nature, our inherited guilt and corruption in Adam, and the Biblical explanation of why human beings sin. We also consider Psalm 51, Mark 7, Romans 7, Hebrews 3, and James 1 and how these passages help us understand our struggle with sin.
Most importantly, understanding our corrupted condition helps us understand our need for Jesus Christ. We do not need merely better circumstances or better behavior. We need the saving grace of Christ and the transforming work of God's Spirit.
This is one of five weekday segments drawn from a complete sermon on Amos 9:11–15. The full sermon explores God's promise to restore David's fallen tent and the hope of God's people under the reign of His King.
