How Sin Damages Your Soul | Amos 9.11–15

0:00 / 9:18

The Story

What does sin actually do to your soul—even when there seem to be no immediate consequences?

In Amos 9:11–15, the judgment coming upon Israel provides a powerful picture of what sin does to us. Sin is never merely an isolated act with no lasting effect. As we repeatedly give ourselves to sin, we cultivate destructive patterns and damage our souls. Paul expresses the same principle in Galatians 6:7–8: we reap what we sow.

In this Biblical teaching from Amos 9, John Musgrave explains how sin can leave “broken places,” “ruins,” and areas of our lives that need to be restored. Sin can damage us even when there is no obvious external consequence. What we repeatedly practice shapes us.

But Amos does not end with destruction. The promise of Amos 9:11–15 points toward restoration: God would restore David’s fallen tent and establish His people again. That promise finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the Son of David and the King whose kingdom has come. Jesus ascended to His throne and now rules and reigns over His people.

The good news of the gospel is that Christians are not left trapped in a cycle of sin, oppression, failure, and occasional relief. Jesus is King. He leads, guides, protects, and restores His people.

In this sermon segment, we consider:
• How sin damages the soul
• Why sin has consequences even when we don't see them externally
• The Biblical principle that we reap what we sow
• How sinful habits shape us
• Israel's exile and ruined cities as a picture of sin's destructive effects
• The relationship between Amos 9:11–15 and Galatians 6:7–8
• Jesus as the Son of David and King
• How the kingdom of God has come in Jesus Christ
• Why the gospel gives Christians hope beyond the destructive cycle of sin

This is one of five weekday segments taken from a complete sermon on Amos 9:11–15.
