Jesus Is King—and He Restores Your Soul | Amos 9.11–15

The Story

What does Jesus being your King actually do for your soul?

In Amos 9:11–15, God promises to restore David’s fallen kingdom, rebuild what has been ruined, and bring His people into abundant fruitfulness. This promise points ultimately to Jesus Christ, the Son of David and King of God’s people.

Because Jesus is your King, your soul is being restored. As Christians grow in Christ, they become increasingly conformed to the image of Jesus. The Christian life is therefore a life of progressive restoration, spiritual maturity, and increasing fruitfulness.

In this section of the Amos 9:11–15 sermon, we consider what it means for Jesus to restore and renew the soul of His people. Sin has damaged us, but Christ is restoring what sin has damaged. Through His Word, His Spirit, the fellowship of His people, and the ordinary means of grace, Jesus progressively makes His people more like Himself.

Amos describes Israel’s restoration in terms of rebuilt cities, abundant harvests, vineyards, gardens, and overflowing fruitfulness. The New Testament helps us see the deeper spiritual reality: those who belong to Jesus are being made fruitful in their souls. Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches” (John 15:5), and those who remain in Him bear much fruit.

This is good news: Jesus is King, and He is restoring His people.
