Jesus Is King—and We Didn’t Want Him | Amos 9.11-15
The Story
What does it mean that Jesus is King—and why do we so often resist His rule?
In 1 Samuel 8, Israel rejected God's design for a king and demanded a king "like the nations." But the deeper problem was not simply Israel's choice of Saul. Like Israel, we often want to rule ourselves rather than submit to God's chosen King.
In Amos 9:11–15, God promises to restore the fallen "tent of David" and raise up the Davidic kingship again. That promise points forward to Jesus Christ, the Son of David and God's chosen King for His people.
Jesus is not merely a spiritual teacher or religious leader. He is the Christ—the Anointed One, the promised Son of David, and the King God gave to bless His people. Matthew emphasizes Jesus' Davidic identity, while His baptism and the Father's declaration, "This is my Son," connect Jesus directly to the Davidic promise.
This passage helps us understand the unity of the Old and New Testaments, the fulfillment of God's promises in Jesus, the Davidic covenant, and what it means for Christians to live under the reign of Christ.
If you want to understand Amos, the Old Testament's promises concerning David, and how they find their fulfillment in Jesus, this study is for you.
