Jesus Is King—and He Keeps Us From Destroying Ourselves | Amos 9.11-15

The Story

Why is it good for you that Jesus is your King?

The Bible's answer is much more practical than we sometimes realize. Throughout the Old Testament, God designed kingship to lead His people in faithfulness and blessing. A faithful king was to protect his people, lead them in worship, trust God, and sacrifice himself for their good—not use his people for his own benefit.

In Amos 9:11–15, God promises the restoration of His people under the reign of David's greater Son. The New Testament identifies Jesus as that King. Jesus is not a king like the nations. He is the faithful King who leads, protects, provides for, and ultimately gives Himself for His people.

Without a king, Israel repeatedly did what was right in its own eyes. And our sinful hearts do the same thing. We do what we want and then justify it. But sin does not give us freedom—it damages us. Sin damages our souls, our relationships, our reputations, and our lives.

Jesus being King is therefore good news. His authority is not oppressive; His rule is for our good. He keeps His people from the destructive consequences of sin and leads us in faithfulness to God.

In this study of Amos 9:11–15, we consider how the Old Testament promise of a restored Davidic King is fulfilled in Jesus Christ and what His kingship means for Christians today.

This teaching is especially useful for Christians interested in Biblical interpretation, Biblical Theology, hermeneutics, the Old Testament's fulfillment in Christ, and the kingship of Jesus.

Scripture discussed includes Amos 9:11–15, Deuteronomy 17, Judges, 1 Samuel 8, 1 Samuel 16–17, Luke 24:27, Luke 24:44, Mark 7:21–23, Galatians 6:7, Ecclesiastes 7:25, and other passages concerning God's design for His King and His people.

This is one of five weekday segments from the full sermon, “Jesus Is King—and That Is Good News,” preached from Amos 9:11–15.
