Jesus Is King—and That Is Good News | Amos 9.11–15

The Story

Why is it good news that Jesus is King?

In Amos 9:11–15, God promises to restore David’s fallen tent and restore His people after exile. That promise points forward to the coming Son of David—the Messiah, the Christ, the Anointed King. When Jesus appears, His identity as the promised King explains why John the Baptist identifies Him as the Christ and why Jesus announces that the kingdom of God has come.

Jesus is not merely a Savior who forgives our sins. He is the King who shepherds, protects, provides for, and blesses His people. As Jesus says in Matthew 9:36, humanity is like sheep without a shepherd—and in John 10, Jesus declares that He is the Good Shepherd. His kingship is therefore not bad news or oppressive rule. Jesus is the good King whose reign brings rest to His people.

This teaching from Amos 9:11–15 examines the restoration promise in its Old Testament context and then follows its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. The promised restoration of David’s kingdom is fulfilled in Christ’s first coming, His present reign over His Church, and the consummation of His kingdom when He returns.

This is an important Biblical and redemptive-historical theme: the gospel is good news because the promised King has come.
