What Did Amos Mean? Amos 9.11–15 and Christ
The Story
What good news did God give His people through the prophet Amos—and how is that promise fulfilled in Christ?
In Amos 9:11–15, God promises restoration after judgment: His people will return from exile, rebuild the ruined land, and once again experience the blessings associated with the Promised Land. But how should Christians understand these promises today?
In this study of Amos 9:11–15, we first ask what Amos meant to the Israelites who heard his prophecy in the eighth century BC. We then consider how the promises of Amos are fulfilled in a greater way through Jesus Christ—through what Christ accomplished in His incarnation, what He is doing now in the life of His church, and what He will accomplish when He returns.
This passage also illustrates an important principle of Biblical interpretation: prophetic books do not always present events in a simple chronological sequence. God may describe the same event from different perspectives, helping His people see different aspects of His purposes.
Amos gives God’s people reason to hope even in the face of coming judgment. God remains faithful to His promises, and in Christ those promises find their greater fulfillment.
This message is especially helpful for Christians studying Amos, the Old Testament prophets, prophecy, Biblical interpretation, hermeneutics, Christ-centered interpretation, and the relationship between Old Testament promises and their fulfillment in Jesus Christ.
