The Story

What does Amos 9:11-15 mean for the church today?

In this passage, God promises to restore David’s fallen tent—and the New Testament shows us that this promise is fulfilled in Jesus Christ and the building up of His church.

Jesus is the Son of David and the King of God's kingdom. From His ascension until His return, Christ is building His church through the proclamation of the gospel, the making of disciples, and the addition of new believers. What began as a seemingly tiny “mustard seed” has grown into a worldwide kingdom—and Christ is still building His church today.

In this sermon segment from Amos 9:11-15, we examine how the Old Testament promises concerning David, the kingdom, the promised land, and the temple find their fulfillment in Christ and His church. We consider Jesus' promise, “I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18), the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20), the growth of the kingdom in Matthew 13, and the New Testament teaching that God's people are now His spiritual house and temple.

This is also an important lesson in Biblical interpretation: how should Christians understand Old Testament promises in light of their fulfillment in Jesus Christ and the New Testament?

If you want to understand Amos, the Old Testament prophets, the kingdom of God, Christ's kingship, and the Biblical meaning of the church more clearly, this study of Amos 9 will help connect these passages together.
