How Christ Builds You Up | Amos 9.11–15

The Story

What is God doing in your life as you follow Jesus?

In Amos 9:11–15, God promises to restore David’s fallen tent—and that promise points beyond the restoration of God’s people as a church to the way God restores and builds up individual Christians.

In this message from Amos 9:11–15, we consider how Christ builds His people up, restoring what is broken and conforming us more and more to His likeness. Romans 8:29 explains that God predestined His people to be “conformed to the likeness of his Son.” The Christian life is therefore a building project: God is progressively rebuilding us to become more like Christ in our character, thinking, and lives.

Amos speaks of restoring, repairing, and rebuilding what has fallen into ruin. Those promises help us understand the hope Christians have in Christ. God does not merely save His people from sin; He is also restoring them, repairing their broken places, and making them increasingly reflective of the image of God in which they were created.

This teaching also considers how God builds Christians up through His Word, the sacraments, and Christian fellowship—and why believers can have confidence that Christ will preserve them and never lose those whom the Father has given Him.

If you want to understand Amos 9, the promises of restoration in the Old Testament, Christian sanctification, the image of God, and how the Bible points us to Christ, this study will help you see how these themes fit together.
