Don't Mistake God's Patience for Approval | Amos 8

0:00 / 14:11

The Story

Why does God sometimes allow people to sin without immediate consequences?

Does prosperity, peace, or an apparently trouble-free life mean that God approves of us?

In this episode of The Gospel for Living, we continue our study of Amos 8 and consider a sobering biblical truth: the absence of immediate judgment is not the same thing as God's approval. Israel was deeply sinful, yet prosperous. They ignored God's commands, corrupted worship, and continued in rebellion—and for a time, nothing seemed to happen.

But Amos warns that judgment was coming.

This passage helps us understand God's patience, the delay of judgment, and the certainty of the coming Day of the Lord. Scripture repeatedly warns us not to interpret God's patience as permission to continue in sin. As Peter explains in 2 Peter 3, people may scoff at the promise of Christ's return because judgment has not yet come—but God's delay does not mean that His promise has failed.

We also consider the relationship between God's patience and His grace toward His people. God does not always discipline His children immediately or punish us as our sins deserve. That patience should lead us to repentance—not to complacency.

In this teaching from Amos 8, we explore:

Why sin does not always bring immediate consequences

Why prosperity and peace are not necessarily signs of God's approval

How God's patience can be misunderstood

What Amos means by the coming judgment

Why the delay of judgment does not mean judgment will never come

The warnings of 2 Peter 3

God's judgment of every hidden thing

The certainty of the final judgment before Christ

How Christians should respond to God's patience

If you want to understand how the Old Testament prophets speak to the coming Day of the Lord and how Scripture interprets Scripture, this episode will help you think carefully about Amos, sin, judgment, grace, patience, repentance, and the return of Jesus Christ.

The question is not simply, “Can I get away with this sin?” The more important question is, “What does God's patience require of me?”
